Design Choices
Patterns, colors and borders shape the finished look
Stamped concrete begins as a properly prepared and poured slab. Integral color or color hardener establishes the base, while a release agent and textured mats create the pattern. Popular choices include ashlar slate, random stone, flagstone, brick herringbone, cobblestone and wood plank. Accent colors, borders and bands can define the field and add visual depth.
Patios and outdoor living
Add stone or brick patterns, borders and accent colors to extend a backyard living area.
Pool decks and walkways
Textured patterns and color-matched finishes can bring a decorative surface to areas around water and along entry paths.
Driveways and entries
Use a full stamped pattern or a decorative border to give a driveway and front walk more character.
Built in Stages
The installation process protects the design
The crew reviews layout, grading, drainage, pattern and color before the pour. After base preparation, forming and reinforcement, the concrete is poured, colored and stamped while workable. Control joints are cut, the surface cures and a sealer helps protect the color from weather and UV exposure.
New Pour or Existing Slab
Stamped concrete versus a stamped overlay
A new pour generally provides the richest stamped result. If an existing slab is structurally sound and its shape works for the project, a stamped overlay may provide a similar decorative look without a full tear-out. Site condition, grading, drainage and access all help determine which approach fits.
Common Questions
Stamped Concrete Installation FAQs
What patterns can be used for stamped concrete?
Common patterns include ashlar slate, random stone, flagstone, brick herringbone, cobblestone and wood plank. Borders and bands can contrast with the main field.
Is stamped concrete slippery around a pool?
Sealers can be formulated with slip-resistant additives, which is especially important for pool decks and sloped areas. The surface use should guide the texture and sealer choice.
Can stamped concrete be installed over an existing slab?
Not directly, but a stamped overlay can be applied over sound existing concrete to create a similar look without removing the slab.
